Glen Schofield Is Making No Compromises in Building a Perfect PUBG Narrative Action Game
Glen Schofield's parvenu studio apartment, Striking Distance, is fashioning a new biz in the same universe American Samoa PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG). They've found themselves in an unique site, nonetheless — they're allowed to do pretty much whatever they want with the property.
"It's absolutely freeing," Schofield aforesaid. "Every once and a while you've got to abstract yourself to defecate sure as shootin that it's true."
Here's how it all went down, by Schofield's account: After leaving Activision, helium started look for places that were a good fit for him — a 28-year industry vet WHO had managed, directed, and produced games in the Dead Space, Call of Duty, and Bequest of Kain series.
He was finally approached by PUBG Corporation. They were looking individual to plunge a studio stateside, and Schofield already had experience building a studio from the ground up from creating Activision's Sledge Games, so he seemed like the redress individual for the job.
"I had a partner off of ideas that I had wanted to do — one particularly," Schofield said. "So, I met with PUBG a couple of multiplication, and they flew Maine over to South Korea. And and then they would come out here and I would meet them. Just altogether along, I really liked talking with them, and their creative philosophy, and their time philosophy."
He inclined his idea for a game, and PUBG Corporation said yes. Non "Yes, but…" or "Yes, and…" Just yes. He was given the green light to go build a studio apartment and make that game that he described.
"They're not giving any sort of creative feedback, in terms of 'change this and that,'" Schofield said. "You know, I've worked with companies that have been of import-handed in the tense before, and they're the perfect opposite. They're alike, 'You'Re the creative dude. You guys come up with it.'"
The game itself is in the premature stages of development, so Schofield wasn't keen to share besides umpteen details some his vision. But he was willing to share that it's a narratively focused game built in the Unreal locomotive that takes place in the world of PUBG.
"It's not PUBG. IT's not PUBG 2. It's our own narrative go through set loosely in the PUBG universe," he said.
When asked if IT was a shooter, he resisted using that description.
"I wouldn't go so right as to call it that, even so," Schofield said. "Army of the Pure's just shout out it more of an accomplish game, because that's kind of what I've worked along finished the geezerhood, with Inelastic Space, Call of Duty, and Lord of the Rings — they weren't all 100 percent shooters. They were action games. That's where my sweet spot is. That's where we're look to go."
A narration concentre is a major change for a game related to PUBG, which isn't known for its story. Before the release of the Season 4 Cinematic Trailer last year, the entire plot of ground could be summed improving Eastern Samoa, "You're someone who has to kill off everyone else before they shoot down you." That on its own was sufficiency to make information technology a worldwide phenomenon and kick soured the battle royale craze that led to the release of games like Fortnite Conflict Royale, Apex Legends, and Call up of Duty: Warzone.
But the real challenge is whether PUBG Bay window bequeath be capable to take its success and deform it into something longer-lasting than a single runaway hit. From the sound of it, PUBG's attractive the melodic theme of a lore-heavy universe and running with it — and Schofield's game will glucinium just the beginning.
"They're creating this big world, similar Marvel would coiffe. We'ray the first game within it, and we're helping them write the story of their population," Schofield said. "So, we're able to fit ours in exactly where we want it to constitute. And so it's basically a post new franchise."
With all the exemption that Striking Outdistance Studios has been given, there's forever the trouble that it'll fall victim to scope creep and spiral unconscious of control with ideas and complexity. Schofield, however, is not worried most that natural event. He's been in the diligence for a age, and he knows how eight-day it takes to finish a project — and how to make sure IT gets complete on a reasonable schedule.
"We're giving ourselves a deadline, and we're impermanent towards it," Schofield said. "It's a very line team that's not taking advantage of the plac at all. We want to get the game through and set out IT out at some point."
Of course, they North Korean won't tell Pine Tree State that deadline — it's too soon to actually commit to anything publicly, especially now that everyone at the studio is having to work from home because of COVID-19.
"I've been through and through a lot, but this is loving," Schofield said. "I've had people make from home, but not when you've got 100 percent of the studio working from home. We've got help from around the world, and everybody else there is working from home. It's crazy."
The studio's not even finished hiring, in fact. They'rhenium looking to bring on other 50 multitude, which is a bit thought-provoking when nobody's allowed to will the household.
"We're trying to do interviews via Zoom and completely that, but anybody that wants to relocate or move, they've kind of put on that on hold out for now," said Schofield. "Simply we want to get the word out that we're hiring like crazy. We'Ra hiring through this. We in reality did hire deuce-ac people last calendar week."
But even with these obstacles, Schofield says they're whirling forward and making deadlines spell maintaining a freedom that Schofield says still feels unreal.
"Information technology's exactly what I want to play," helium aforesaid. "They let me build the studio the direction I want to make IT, and they'Ra letting me name the game I want to realise. I came in with an idea, and they approved it, and that's what we're devising. Information technology's precisely what I want to exercise."
